the better team at the end of the year, how can it make sense to have automatic placement of conference champions in next year's 12 team format? By that logic, shouldn't it be the best 12 teams based on rankings? One conference could have the top 4 teams and other conference champions may not be a top 20 team. Seems like inconsistent logic imo.

politicians, and corporate entities. It's not about the reality of the truth but the subjectivity that will drive the most eyeballs and revenue. This is what ESPN wanted and needed because they've put so much money behind the SEC which was a very weak and not the best conference this year.
If you think the collusion is bad this time around, just wait until the conference champs are joined by remaining teams in the Big10 and SEC, regardless of whether they are deserving.
I you thought this crap was corrupt before, you ain't seen nothing yet.

"Alabama is better than FSU"
Probably true but UGA is probably better than all the teams but the season mattered for them.
The logic isn't consistent. They got what they wanted. Big brands and representation from a large geographical area. I'll watch. I'll enjoy. They'll make their money.
Karma is a bitch.
It's not designed to make sense or be fair, it's all about the money.
Seems pretty straightforward.
outside (maybe, way outside) the top 12. The logic to include Alabama this year because they are perceived to be the better team this year is thrown out the window with next year's conference champion automatic inclusion.
7 if the best non-power team gets an invite but I don't recall if that's the case.

"at large" slots are a beauty contest.) It will be more analogous to the way the Basket ball tourney bids are handed out.
...the truth is that they simply were not going to leave the SEC out of the playoff no matter what. That required taking Alabama who won the championship which in turn required taking TX which beat Alabama soundly at home.
It is not a coincidence that the four teams in are all B10 and SEC this next year.
