Hartman is about the best case for a player and I wouldn’t characterize that as a phenomenal success.
He is the rare case of the transfer that is a win-win-win. His transfer was a win for ND, Duke and him personally. He was blocked at ND and this past season was named Duke's DL of the year. Looks like he was a popular team member over there.
Good for him.

There are a few big names that do well, but for the most part it is not a great deal for the average player.

At least for your average bear.
In the elite cases, I think those are brokered moves as much as anything else.
Those stats do make a lot of sense, seeing how many a transferred player might not see the field at all in any kind of meaningful playing time, or might be very limited in terms of what he can do. I'm sure that stat is a bit skewed by the craziness that is happening with Colorado by the Transfer Portal King himself (Deion Sanders). His taking in only a half dozen high school players for this class will certainly tilt that number even higher.
We've had a few such players, that Freddy Canteen played 3 games I think, before medically retiring. Kaleb Smith never saw the field here due to injuries as well, and Trevor Speights also never saw the field due to injuries as well.
That being said, I think we've been a heck of a lot more promising as a transfer destination compared to other places, given that most of our guys that we brought in through the transfer portal have been at least reasonably good contributors.

He was their RB1, but didn't get that many carries. He was quite productive when given the chance, though (119 carries, 653 yards, 7 TD). I'm just a bit surprised he only caught 8 passes all year, given his versatility.
I can see why he didn't get the ball that much, since Jayden Daniels was a one man wrecking crew, having rushed for over 1100 yards and passed for almost 4000 yards.
Just kidding.
Even without Audric Estime, and assuming Devyn Ford doesn't come back for a 6th year, we already have a solid rotation of 3 experienced backs (Love, Payne, Price), and two real freshmen studs coming up (Williams, Young), and Kedren Young may end up looking more like Audric Estime sooner rather than later.
He has fantastic vision and instincts with his blocks and the open field, and is a proven #1 back for a top program. We'd be lucky to have him back.
That said, if he's leaving L.S.U., I have to believe it's because he wants to go somewhere he can be the bellwether guy and get 20 touches per game. No one is getting that at N.D. next year.
One slight nit, I think both Love and Price have higher upside than Diggs, but would love to have Diggs back.
Hopefully the OL and QB spots come together. Going into 2024 those two positions are the big question marks. The Oregon State game gave me hope.
