It sounds like he was not as smart as he thought and made mistakes out of arrogance. I suspect Carroll may be suffering from the same fault although he was never in charge of player personnel at Seattle.
He might be better off taking a break and viewing football from afar for a year.
Trust me.
And John Schneider has always been the Player Personnel guy with Seattle during Carroll's time there. Carroll has been far more collaborative than Belichick ever was.
Belichick basically was the de-facto GM and when really good Player Personnel types like Scott Pioli, Nick Caserio, Monti Ossenfort and Dave Zeigler left, the quality of the roster sank. The presence of Brady made NE an attractive destination for veterans who were willing to take pay cuts for a chance to win a SB. Once Brady left and the Player Personnel guys left, Belichick hasn't been so hot.
And that makes key decision makers more leery of a guy who most folks wouldn't exactly call collaborative and seems to always think he is the smartest guy in the room.

He may have been interviewed because of his track record with Brady. He merited an interview but they passed him by didn't they?
Maybe they figured out his more recent track record is a better indicator of future success. He totally fucked up the handling of the QBs since Brady. His hiring of one of his defensive home boys to be OC was a recipe for disaster which is exactly what happened.
He wants to run the whole show, why would you let him? They probably offered him a coach only position and he being stubborn as hell balked.
At times he had smart people to assist and help him out (such as Scott Pioli and Caserio), but two things have covered up his personnel shortcomings for two decades:
A) Having Tom Brady on offense
B) Being a defensive genius that can scrape together competent defenses from spare parts.
Even still go look at the Patriots record of drafting defensive backs in the second round. Or wide receivers. It is ugly as hell.
