It’s not college football anymore… it’s minor league professional football.
Better than the current system, but still subject to judgment errors.
Mediocre recent signature game record
Does not play in a conference championship
Comparatively weak schedule (4 non-Power teams in 2024)
If FL State at 13 - 0 was snubbed. ND will be given few if any breaks to get into the playoff mix.
P.S. I know that Alabama and the rest get a pass on scheduling 3 chump opponents,
but perception is reality. ND is not perceived as a legitimate highest status program.
Those 4 chump opponents hurt ND.
ND made the playoffs or BCS Title game multiple times with only 2/4 teams eligible. I don't see ND getting left out at all with 1-loss, and a better than even chance with 2 losses as long as they get a quality win.
If you think a 2 loss ND team with this 2024 schedule gets one of those 7 slots
But you appear more delusional than BVZ which is saying something
Otherwise, I think it will be very difficult to remain independent and be in the mix.
Can't wait to hear the #13 / #14 / #15 teams bitching about how they got screwed.
The same teams will be there in the end. That won't change. Just more money, more games, and a diluted regular season - just like every other sport, killing the one thing that was unique about FBS college football.

And we will have tougher schedules moving forward.
The winner of the SEC, ACC, Big 10, and Big 12 - get the first four spots, in ranked order. Then the next 5 - 12 get spots based on their rankings. The best "Group of 5" team gets in based on their ranking. If lower than 12 - they will be the 12 seed. Notre Dame can be no better than 5th, even if ranked #1.
Is that correct ?

In this format, the top four conference champions receive a first-round bye, with the No. 5 team playing No. 12, No. 6 facing No. 11, No. 7 facing No. 10 and No. 8 facing No. 9. The 5-8 seeds would host the first round at their respective schools, and the New Year’s Six bowls (Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl) would host the quarterfinals and semifinals on a rotation, similar to how the six bowls took turns hosting the semifinals under the four-team format.
There are only four conferences now so the highest ranked 2nd place conference team will be in the five spot. Ensures SEC usually, or UM-OSU.
And that team would probably be the 12 seed

They don't play in a conference title game either, so that's their bye.

Am I reading that right? An undefeated ND team, because they are independent, will not get a top 4 seed? Granted, that scenario might be unlikely…
ND fans have nothing to bitch about with this.
A lot of conferences have unbalanced divisions. As a 5 seed, they'd be playing the 12 seed instead of a conference title. That's likely a worse team than most of the formerly known as P5 teams had to play in their title game. It's fair, even if they are ranked 1 or 2, because it's the 13th game. It's actually easier than if they were in the current SEC or even BIG conference.
Seeding is more of a worry in R2. They would have to play a tougher 2nd round game than if they were in a conference. Regardless, they have to win 3 post-season games for a title, just like everyone else.
