offensive line.
Mahomes first OL also was terrible, and he was successful in spite of it. And it isn't like Fields is a statue. I don't see it, could be wrong.

Despite the NFL being QB needy league, several QB needy teams, passed on him. Poles' malarky about wanting to treat Fields "right" is pure spin. Poles overestimated his value (like you do) and by the time the music stopped, all he got was a 6th. He is a perfect fit behind Wilson who isn't as good as his press clippings and the minute Seahawk defense (many of whom resented the golden child press his got) left for their money, so did his performance since Wilson has never been a guy who can carry a team. His success in Seattle is a good parallel to what is happening with Brock Purdy. You don't have to be a great qb when you have a great defense, OL, top 5 RB , top 5 TE and top 5 WR.
And living in Chicago (but not a Bears fan), I can tell you that Fields can't read defenses. Having watched too many Bears aftergame shows for the sheer glee (I am a Packer fan), they just carped about the reads he missed. When the Bears won, it was because of his legs, when they lost, it was because he couldn't find receivers. The OL just wasn't that bad this year, yet he still missed read after read.
Maybe someone can turn him into Taysom Hill. Maybe he gets into a perfect situation like Brock Purdy.
He can throw better than most spread-option QB's, but his ability to read and adjust on the fly, when it comes to looking for WR3 and WR4 is below average, at best.
There were many times last year, that he would look for WR1 and WR2, and then take off running, right as WR3 and / or WR4 would be breaking free for a potential big gain. Either that, or he can't doesn't see when a receiver breaks from the route to become wide open.
He has made steady improvement in the last few years, to the point where he's a serviceable QB, but he's holding himself back by not learning how to be a smarter QB.
That, plus if he keeps running like this, all of the hard hits from those 250 lb, fast linebackers will turn him into an old man faster than they did to Cam Newton (who was bigger, stronger, tougher, and faster). Even those safeties making those tackles are 20 lbs heavier, and significantly faster than college safeties.
At this point in his career, he's closer to resembling the 1991 version of Steve Young, which wasn't too bad of a situation with that all-star cast around him. It wasn't until Young finally learned to stay in the pocket, look for those other receivers, and stop running so much, that he became one of the best in 1994.

I was worried that they might do something smart like keep Fields and add a weapon Marvin Harrison Jr and protection with Joe Alt instead.
