The era of the student athlete on college football teams is DEAD. These are professional franchises… and very profitable ones!

Football and basketball subsidize the other sports.
Plus there is an “Arms Race” which requires spending on facilities, coaches, nutrition, medical, etc.
It may generate a lot of revenue, but it is typically not profitable.
How much money would be left over for that star QB once the program has to pay for the huge stadiums, practice facilities, administrative functions, etc.? All items that the schools have subsidized up to this point.
If players want schools to pay them like professionals, then the whole model needs to change.

I get your point and I love our women's sports programs... but an individual athlete deserves what he or she earns.
watching equal competition in women's sports can be fun too, which it is in our case with women's basketball or volleyball, but if you look at women's basketball there are only about 8 good teams that can play each other close. So that makes the level of play that much more important to be watchable, which it just is not.
No reason to pick on the ladies.

I chose that example because I felt it might be the least likely to ever earn any revenue.
