Apparently he was a Butkus award finalist last season.
That was even more surprising.

Not how he plays, but I felt he was grossly under appreciated by Irish nation like Smith. Smith was the best safety coming out of college, but it seemed like there were a lot of Irish “fans” criticizing him every week.
I felt Liafua faced similar criticism, and oftentimes excessive.
The complaints about Marist were not about ability, and certainly not about athleticism. He did make many plays that others just could not do. He was criticized for too often for making the wrong read, being so ineffective on blitzes or just generally being out of position. He was the poster boy for those that wanted the younger players to play. And, it did seem that he was given more slack by the coaches because of his freakish athletic ability.
He had his best year, though, this past season. The Cowboys have often made reach picks based upon potential, so his selection was surprising but not that shocking.
I have never seen a PFF rating of 100 so, even the very best, make mistakes. Overall, I think he was a good player.
Liafau plays with passion but guy was out of position a lot.

I wasn't expecting his being drafted until day 3, at the best. I was guessing more of an undrafted, priority free agent, and am happy to be wrong.
That being said, my opinion is that he was playing out of position as a linebacker. I always thought he would have been much more at home being a weakside defensive end, and where he could rush the passer from a 3 point stance.
said, I’m certainly happy for the kid.

round by several of the "experts"
Its mid 3rd round and a bunch of CBs have been drafted including several I've never heard of.
Hopefully his name gets called by the end of this round.
They are definite values there.
I was expecting 3rd round, and I'm pleasantly surprised. I still think he would have benefited from staying for the 2024 season, being "the man" at LT, and really showcasing his stuff, but if you're a college player and ending up as a 2nd round draft pick (regardless of position), you're in a really good situation.
Best of all, he's not stuck on a garbage team.
