Link: Notre Dame vs. Penn State 1992: The Snow Bowl
hated leaving for PI a little over a week after tying michigan.
We’re both pretty lean and had to layer up to stay warm.
The ride back to Chicago, after a stop at Rocco’s was pure elation. The pizza and beer never tasted better.
Last home game of my life as a ND student...
Everyone was holding their breath in the end, and after Reggie Brooks caught the 2 pt conversion, the whole student section erupted, and everyone was randomly hugging each other.
The lady I was hugging was someone that I knew quite well, and we absolutely despised each other. For a second, we were both joyously hollering and embracing, and then both of us saw who each other was, and both of us went silent with horrified / disgusted looks on our faces.
That's OK. Suffering that moment of disgusted regret was worth it, seeing us take out Penn State like that. Coming away with a victory by a razor's edge was something truly amazing to watch in person.
Everyone will certainly remember the heroics of a flu-struck Rick Mirer, Jerome Bettis, Derrick Mayes (for seizing away a sure interception from a defender's hands), and certainly Reggie Brooks for their last minute heroics, but it was the defense that deserves special credit for the very last second heroics.
After that go-ahead score, the 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty made us kickoff at the 20 yard line, and Craig Hentrich had his only bad kickoff of the year. When Penn State started at the 50 yard line, and only needed about 20 yards to have a chance at a game winning field goal with 20 seconds left, that made for a lot of unease until the final seconds ticked away.
Last home game of senior year, and I remember running onto the field to celebrate and just kind of screaming as we wandered around aimlessly. It wasn't a perfect game, but it was a great capstone to 4 years as a student.
Dad loved ND and proudly sent us there but he was a Nebraska season ticket holder. He went with me to that ND game because the Huskers had an "easy win" that weekend against Iowa State. Just before the final dramatic plays, they announced Iowa State upset the Huskers. After the two point conversation I was jumping up and down hugging my Dad, but he was stone faced. All he said was, "I'm cold."
They were stacked.
Mike Miller fumbling away the ball kept Michigan in that game.
The Stanford loss was where we weren't able to jump on a ball in the end zone for a TD, and instead, settled for a safety.
That would have put the game out of reach for Stanford, since they would have been forced to pass, and wouldn't have been able to rely on their ground game.
That being said, that Stanford team was pretty damned good, and Bill Walsh really turned around that program.
There was no doubt we were the best team by the year's end. Most of the Alabama faithful grudgingly agree that we would have pasted them in the Sugar Bowl.

in the bars when these two teams would play each other. I loved when they played more frequently as well. There’s a cool, iconic picture out there with Mirer up under center with the snow falling.
....they're waiting to their beloved JoePA to come back to life!
He claimed he had Big 10 priorities.
After beating up on Faust, he wanted no part of Holtz.
Had the series continued, it might not have been good for us.
As good as we were in 1993, they had the team talent to make things difficult for us, and it would have been at Beaver Stadium. They had an up and coming QB in the way of Kerry Collins.
Paterno's 1994 team would have beaten us pretty soundly that year. Our offensive line was in shambles that year, and keeping 5 healthy starting offensive linemen was a monumental task that year due to the worst luck. That, plus our best prospect, Will Lyell, had to medically retire because of a back injury.
Penn State was firing on all cylinders, and trying to stop that offense led by Collins and Kijana Carter, would have made for a miserable day, especially since our offense had troubles sustaining drives.
work over it. My cousin who was a member of the ND team from '85 - '89 still laments over it!
