Defending the championship...long as we're dreaming.
We could go 11-1 this year, run through the playoff to finish 15-1 National Champions and then next season go 12-0 as the only undefeated team and defending NC...
...to get the F'ing 5 seed.
I can't believe with all the allegedly smart people in the room discussing this, no one came up with the idea of splitting the first round byes from being tied directly to seed order.
I'm fine with 4 conference champions having a bye since they played an extra game while we were off. But they could easily just make a hard set rule that 4 conference champions are auto-qualifiers and have first round byes, but get seeded in the order they are ranked.
Under these rules ND could potentially earn a 1-4 seed if ranked that high, but could never get a bye.
Seems like such a simple solution..
Fwiw, if they're actually that good, playing a home game against the 12th seed will be a cake walk, they could rest some starters, etc. Other teams play the conference championship, we don't. I don't think it's that bad tbh.
As #5 or #1 seed nothing changes about our first opponent in playoff, it's second opponent that changes.
As #1 seed we would play the lowest from seeds 8-11 in the second round, but as #5 seed our second round game is set against the #4 seed.
Big difference wouldn't you say?
Fortunately I don't think the current system will be around long enough for that to matter.
