back when yost was athletic director/coach of michigan and the big 10 was being formed, he did everything he could to get n.d. banned from membership in the conference as well as banned from college sports in general. he was a hater. he forbid big 10 members from playing the irish under penalty of possible exile. sparty defied this threat (and it could have been very costly for them) but they put n.d. on their schedule and that gave us a quality opponent when we really needed one. i'm not a sparty fan, but that act, even though it was last century, softened my opinion of them.
i do, however, hate everything michigan.
well, except for lloyd's kid.
MSC (MSU) did not have the stature that Notre Dame had and continues to have. As a state college, they did not have the national prominence Notre Dame had built. They were a fledgling state college that Michigan suppressed for years. Michigan State owes Notre Dame a great deal of thanks. John Hannah had built a valuable relationship with Father John Cavanaugh of Notre Dame, and in 1943 the two agreed upon an annual series beginning in 1948. This series was very attractive to the Western Conference as they considered candidates to fill the University of Chicago’s seat in the Big Ten.
In fact Hannah initially offered to play Notre Dame every year with 80 percent of the games held in South Bend, Ind. (Michigan played MSU only in Ann Arbor for 35 years) Astonishingly, the Irish insisted that the games be hosted evenly between the two schools. In 1949, the rivalry began and one year later, the Spartans were approved to join the Big Ten.

nothing against the State of Michigan, but all things university 'JC' of michigan can choke on a fat one and perish 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

One game I sat next to the wife of the MSU Sports information director. He was a ND grad, can't recall his name but a nice guy. I asked who he pulled for in this game, she said MSU.....but it was tough.
The coeds are hot and they know how to party.
