.....talent was back then. Calabrese, Fox, Motta, Collinsworth, Harrison Smith (although wouldn't have guessed in a million years he'd play 16+ yrs. in the NFL), Dan McCarthy, Sergio Brown, etc. to name a few, were at best DII players.
The defensive talent actually wasn't that bad. While it wasn't on par with what we had in 2012, it was still serviceable.
Jon Tenuta kept calling for those stupid jailbreak blitzes every down, and all it took was a simple quickout or screen pass for a team to easily pick up good yardage against us.
The only time his defense actually worked was against Nevada, where a really dumb Colin Kaepernick couldn't make a throw to save his life.
The funny thing here, is that on the rare occasions where Tenuta called a conservative defense, that's when the defense played at its best.
Had we played a more conservative bend, but don't break, defense, I would all but guarantee you that at least 4 of those 6 losses would have flipped to the win column.
at times to it and an element of surprise. Tenuta sent the whole freaking kitchen sink nearly play after after play, thus his play calling was predictable and he got burnt because of it. I hope God has a special place for all of us for what we've had to endure over the years since Holtz.
