The reason he is not the answer:
He had multiple prior letdown beat downs to far inferior teams.
He knew this was another chance to end that trend
The Team looked like crap and for their arses handed to them again.
No great coach looses these games repeatedly.
Sure many great coaches may have 1 or two inexplicable losses….over a 15-20 year career, not in under 3 years.

When you hire a guy that has no head coaching experience, you're just throwing the dice and hoping. There is no strategy or sound reasoning to achieve a successful outcome.
Will ND learn their lesson after MF's tenure concludes? I doubt it. Remember that ND willingly acted as the training ground for Gerry Faust, Bob Davie, Charlie Weis and now Freeman. We also know that when they hire someone who has been a head coach, they never aspire to get the best but settle for what seems an okay gamble and ends up being little more than a stopgap until the next hiring cycle.
Since ND insists on riding this merry-go-round, I really don't see any relief for the fan base unless random chance delivers us a savior (like it did with Holtz).

a better coach than this and at time of hire, identified it as a . mistake
Remember when Pope Urban (the Meyer) was supposedly a done deal until Bob Davie told him he'd never get the athletes he needed at ND?
Since then I can't recall an established coach who seriously "wanted" the job.
Coaches who fail at ND do not go on to have glorious careers elsewhere.
And of course there is the racial issue, as ND is undeniably the whitest campus among any top 20 football school.
Freeman has been making inroads on that issue, especially attracting black recruits who are also Christian, ie. high character types.
Admittedly, he was inexperienced as a "head" coach... that was a given and so was the "short term" risk we are now experiencing.
Long term might well be very different.
I'm 77 and the years have taught me patience when it comes to "long term" investments.
I am 84 and believe you are correct. If Marcus is replaced, I can only hope that previous hiring fiascos will not be repeated.

Run off tackle, pick up the first down.
Munch the clock don’t give the ball back.
We got handled on both lines of scrimmage.
If we are icing the game, I’m fine with putting an extra OL on the field.
Just my 2 cents

He had a few slip ups that were mostly his fault, but never when he had a stacked roster like this.
I don't think Kelly ever lost a game at ND when the talent differential was as large as ND over NIU was.
From Pete Sampson's latest Athletic article:
"Kelly went 42-1 at Notre Dame when the Irish were top 10 (in the AP Poll) and facing an unranked opponent. Lou Holtz went 49-6. Weis went 8-1. Willingham went 4-1, and Bob Davie went 1-2.
Freeman is 2-2."

No excuse for losing to them at home.
