Expect elite college football programs to decouple entirely from scholastics.
Coaches and players will be contract employees of corporations wholly owned by the universities.
That is going to be a huge decision point for ND and liked-mined institutions still committed to academic integrity.

If it goes that way College football will be dead in 5-10 years. Once it’s truly pay for play why watch them? They are not part of anyone’s Alma mater and become nothing more than a minor league for the NFL much in the way MLB and the NHL and the NBA D league……most won’t bother following the teams anymore. I know I won’t, and I much prefer college ball to the pros…..at least as it used to be.

Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Oregon, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. At least SC is private & likewise ND.
Anyway, how is it that an entity that is a state-chartered tax-exempt organization whose primary purpose is to provide education to the citizens of that state is somehow able to own a professional sports team? There's probably something there legally at a charter, tax-exemption, and Federal tax-exemption level (i.e., unrelated business income tax).
But when a hired gun like Riley Leonard is making $1.2M and Jeremiyah Love is making not $1.2 million, the inequity of the whole thing will eventually force the issue.

Expect formal contracts between the players and the teams with mutual obligation clauses soon.
The thing is, in sports if a player decides to take a dive on the field, nobody can stop him.

This is nothing new, only the payments are more transparent now....no more SEC bag men. And the amount of money involved is significantly higher.
Agree that ND has a monumental decision to make. Do we want to compete in this new world? We certainly have the resources to draw on.
Jim Tressel getting fired for players receiving tattoos seems so quaint about now.
Yes, it all feels dirty.

Plus all these schools the first time you step on campus is a football game.
Heck, without football weekends mo one is going to visit these campuses.
Football & athletics is the front porch of the universities in America…I don’t make the rules I just live by them
They didn’t build all those shyboxes and such tip join the Ivy League, imho
Just my 2 cents, as always I could be wrong
way it is played anyway. If we don't, we will become more woke than ever.
now they have to get urban to coach
they already passed on Pitino to coach unlike two Catholic schools.
1. It's OK to hire a guy with no prior HC experience at ND, as long as they are a great recruiter
2. We have to hire proven already big time NC winning HCs like Saban, Stoops, Urban, etc...
For number 1 the success numbers are so inverse when we hire experienced vs inexperienced, I can't believe this is still a thing that even earns discussion.
For number 2, literally the polar opposite of number 1...we have NEVER done this. No HC we've hired came in with a D1/FBS Natty already under their belt. The closest one we ever hired to being that Big Name sure thing was Frank Leahy who had a grant total of 2 years HC experience at Boston College.
Just hire solid, experienced HCs who are good recruiters and give them 3-5 years and repeat. This is the format we used to be the (then) program with the most consensus NCs from the most different HCs.
The sooner we return to our success model the sooner we can add #12.
Coaches the likes of Meyer, Nick Saban, etc., were all given total control over the football program, down to every last detail, and the university will essentially be hands-off.
The Board of Trustees at the University of Notre Dame will *never* cede that kind power to anyone.
While someone the likes of Saban proved that he can build a program, elevate it to greatness, and maintain that standard for a long time without getting into serious trouble, there's always the big fly in the ointment.
Urban Meyer is no Nick Saban. He's dirty, sleazy, and a snake oil salesman all wrapped into one, and like his previous two stops, would end up getting the program in serious trouble.
Unlike the other schools that vigorously fight those charges, we'd roll over and willingly take the gang beating that would come as a result.
...either of those guys will be pursued by ND at this juncture...you REALLY don't "get" the school at all...
my point is why go half way
you're all in or not
realize a significant return for as long as they can.
At some point, I strongly believe, they will have to pivot...and they know it.

Not competitive enough to challenge the true fully "minor league" pro outfits at the top...
major players. We have to stay with the "big time" programs and we can do this and still keep academic honesty. I guarantee that the hugest reason most kids apply to ND is because they love the camaraderie that football brings and the way the football players are mingled with the regular students. Does the nation give a shit about Georgetown's academic standards, they only know they don't play quality football if they play it at all. The only time you here from Georgetown is when their basketball team performs well.
How do you know "that the hugest reason most kids apply to ND is because they love ... the way the football players are mingled with the regular students." If only. My guess is that the better compensated players already have off-campus digs to which they can retreat as needed, for example.

...very haphazardly heading..
No one is concerned about the best interests of College Football...so it's just evolving on its own in a way that is certainly not healthy from an educational perspective...and I think may also ultimately fail from a revenue perspective.
Time will tell...but ND is facing some serious decisions...
