after Freeman was asked what he thought of his quarterback’s play against Miami.
“ “He was consistent. There are some throws he’s got to make. He knows that. We’ll clean it up in practice. Or guess what … if we don’t like the way he throws those plays in practice, then don’t call them you know?”
Freeman then explained he believes the Irish need to put Leonard in a place to succeed, which is far less odd than the part about not calling some plays because his starting quarterback can’t handle them.”
Unsurprisingly, fans weren’t thrilled

Maybe we should insist a QB at a major football school can do things we need him to, especially if u went and got him in the portal.
The leoanord issue has grown way beyond a kid struggling to make throws. MF looks and sounds pretty ridiculous on this subject

It peaked on that rainy night at Michigan. The next week started his redemption tour to become an all time fan favorite.Am I miisremembering?
The fact that Ian Book's arm was barely average, and couldn't make a reliable long range throw was the biggest criticism. It's not wrong to put forth those criticisms.
He was still the best man for the job, since he could run about 75% (my estimate) of Brian Kelly's ridiculously complex playbook, and still effectively spread the field. What we saw in his time as a starter was how effective things could be if you had a quarterback who could do most of the criteria. Against almost anyone, that's enough to win.
That was certainly good enough for two playoff appearances, and two decent bowl victories (Citrus, Camping World), but we weren't going to beat Alabama, Clemson (when healthy), tOSU, etc. with that level of performance. We needed a lot of help from Lady Luck, as well as Clemson missing most of their NFL drafted front seven in 2020 to beat them, and even then it was by the skin of the teeth. The rematch in the ACC Championship game proved that we were still not in that absolute top echelon.

At least, when Montana was at ND (not to equate the 3 players). I believe Montana was constantly coming off the bench to save the starters from their lack of performance.
Other more heralded players were on those teams, but they weren't able to move the ball in games.
