As a player, Tommy Rees stuck to what he knew, because his arm was easily the weakest of any QB we have ever played at the position. If it weren't for Michael Floyd being there as our WR1 in 2010 and 2011, those seasons would have been much worse.
As a coach, he kept trying to make all of his stronger armed QB's become short range dink 'n dunk passers, instead of letting them be downfield passers, and this continued while he was at Alabama.
He had several strong armed, highly talented QB's who were known for being able to throw very nice downfield passes, and almost ruined them. Even Eli Holstein showed what he could do when he was no longer under Rees' thumb, and is playing very well at Pitt.
I would point out that Alabama chose a qualified head coach to succeed (impossible to replace) Saban ... unlike a certain former ND AD.
