Wouldn't you rather roll the dice on someone more dynamic, like Minchey even if it risks a few more losses than the safe choice? The goal is to win a NC. And I'm trying (and failing) to envision a scenario where ND could beat Bama/Milroe with Angeli as our QB.
team's players IMO.
ND is not winning a NC with their OL and DL in the hospital. The chances for all of them is zero right now.
Angeli has done some really good things when given the reins. He was terrific in the Sun Bowl.....I get that the opponent was terrible, but I do not believe Riley Leonard could have accomplished the same results in a 1-1 setting.
As I was thinking about this, something kind of interesting when thinking about Leonard verse Angeli. I think Angeli beats NIU, but loses against A&M and Louisville.
But it's all speculation based on very small sample size.
Since the backup is always better when the team isn't playing the way fans think they should, the backup to the backup must be twice as good as the backup. It's all there if you follow fan logic. Even more understandable is wanting to just put Carr in now and "play for the future," that makes him at least three times better than Leonard, maybe four even, I have to check the math again and see if it is exponential or not. I'll get back to you.

He performed well against a weakened OSU but that was an exhibition game.
Until we see him perform as THE starting qb in a game that counts, the jury will be out re: his full potential.
But against the top 15ish teams u need that skilll set of agility a scramble etc.

Behind our current OL, not a chance.

We haven't seen enough from Angeli to make any concrete conclusions, positive or negative.
But if we're going to make a current assessment of him based on things we've seen, not just based on dislike for the current starter then there are some pretty clear cut things we can say.
1. While he doesn't have a cannon for an arm, he has enough arm to make all the throws, he has touch and accuracy on deep balls and and short to intermediate passes.
2. He's a gamer who seems to find success even on what appear to be sloppy/broken plays and guys seem to want to play for him.
3. While not a dynamic runner, he actually has good mobility and running ability, while not enough to scare defenses it is enough to make them pay if they ignore his legs.
4. His field vision and ability to go through progressions seems good when he has time and protection in the pocket but appears to fall off rapidly when pressured, leading to some first read/bad decision type 'forced' throws.
5. He doesn't navigate the pocket real well when protection breaks down, this along with poor pocket movement decisions (not a lack of mobility) and holding the ball too long leads him into unneeded sack opportunities.
6. He's sometimes a little sloppy with his ball security when trying to make a play.
starting for ND. He's a solid and reasonably reliable back up QB and I believe he knows and understands his role. In his defense, I think MF could use him EACH game in a different fashion just to give RL a breather and to put opposing defenses one more thing to think about. Great kid but will never be a starter for MOST D1 teams.
All Angeli has ever done almost every time is perform at an extremely high level.
He seems to have a really good grasp from what Ive seen. And he throws a nice ball. Depends next year on who puts it all together. They all have a lot of potential. Jeff George had all the physical skills, but wasn't great at QBing. Then you look at Purdy with the 9ers. He's pretty darn good lacking some of that.
I think he's shows potential. Not Matt Stafford arm potential, but he's got a good feel for the game.

Angeli is accurate, can run some. Strong enough arm. Minchey brings the run threat, but doesnt seem as accurate. Carr looks like the most potential to me arm talent wise and accuracy. Havent seen him run but they say he can, but probably not as well as Minchey. He's possibly the best passer, but Id imagine still learning the O. That is, all from the limited amount we've got to see.
I'd personally be fine with any of them. Angeli has talent. Seems to be a winner. It'll be a real spring ball battle I'd imagine. It's going to depend a lot on how they progress Id think. Probably matters a bit on how porous or not the O line is too.
Right now I'd put my money on Carr, but I think it's close.
Like whatever that kids name was at Georgia. But I don't see us recruiting WRs like that and the OL is a rebuild.
he could do it
Will Black is coming iin. We'll get our injured guys back. And we'll have experience across the line, unlike this year, and a year in the weight program for the freshman.
I think the problem with WR's this year is time to throw, not their abilities to get open. And I'm sure we lose our transfers next year. But Im sure they'll bring in some.
And we'll have Greathouse and Faison back. Cam Williams, KK Smith, Micah Gillbert, Logan Soldate, and the 3 freshmen.
A lot of potential, but also projection.
