I think Freeman is a great cheerleader, but at best a mediocre head coach. He's yet to deliver a top 5 class, and not only hasn't closed on difference making talent, but continues to lose the ones that have committed. There's a lot of talk about what would have happened if DK would have signed. Whether he would have transferred and if not, would he have been a bust. The fact of the matter is who cares. When you're consistently stocking 5* quarterbacks, it doesn't matter if one of them is a bust.
If ND doesn't start consistently closing on difference making talent, we'll continue deluding ourselves that by some magic or force of personality, ND will get over the hump. I wouldn't necessarily call Michigan an outlier because of the quality of coaching. Every champion on that list other than MI has had at least 2 top 5 recruiting classes in the last 6 years except ND.
YR CHAMPION RECRUITING CLASS RANK AND YEAR
2023 Michigan - 16(2024), 18(2023), 9(2022), 15(2021), 10(2020)
2022 Georgia - 1(2024), 2(2023), 3(2022), 3(2021), 1(2020)
2021 Georgia - 1(2024), 2(2023), 3(2022), 3(2021), 1(2020)
2020 Alabama - 2(2024), 1(2023), 2(2022), 1(2021), 2(2020)
2019 LSU - 7(2024), 5(2023), 12(2022), 4(2021), 4(2020)
2018 Clemson - 14(2024), 11(2023), 14(2022), 5(2021), 3(2020)
Notre Dame 11(2024), 10(2023), 6(2022), 12(2021), 18(2020)
Gotta stop with the portal and need to go with one of these young guys.
You have to go all the way to Brady Quinn as the last legitimately NFL worthy QB. I liked Book a lot and he was the last “developed” and successful QB. Few and far between.
This also keeps WRs away. Who was the last 1000 yard receiver?

First of all, it's incredibly ignorant to think any of us know Freeman's ceiling yet when he's 1/3 of the way into his third year ever doing it. Maybe he's already peaked or maybe he's still ascending, we just don't know.
Secondly, Freeman is NOT a great cheerleader. In fact if "cheerleader" was a check block for grading a HC this would be one of Freeman's lowest grades. His pouty face sideline demeanor on every play that doesn't go perfectly is the exact opposite of what a great cheerleader does. Cheerleaders are overtly positive even when the game doesn't look like it's going well...Freeman is not. He's more like an emotional fan if anything, looking up in the sky like 'WHY?' and letting his demeanor go up and down affected by the last play, rather than being the rock steady baseline that affects future plays.
You just want to speak negatively about Freeman and that's fine, there's plenty of reason for that...just be accurate instead of throwing monkey poop on the wall and hoping it sticks.
Your claim that UM is not an "outlier" because of "good coaching" overlooks the years of bad coaching evidence (MSU Punt Block Game, TCU, etc, etc). UM actually ended one season at 2-4 by quiting so that their program history would not take on more losses and particularly OSU would not have a chance to "hang a hundred" on them as they were threatening.
Michigan did not have different recruiting success than ND - they cheated in every way they possibly could. Recruiting violations, COVID violations, practice time violations, and even the specter of steroids hangs over the program that took relative unknowns and turned them into something more in Nebraska-like fashion.
TCU coaches even admitted after their victory over UM that they had found out about their cheating to know their signals ahead of time, and they used it in key moments to win the game).
You also ignore the dramatic changes in NIL and TP that have changed the recruiting game greatly.
Our academic requirements are even more of an anchor in this environment. We can offer the same or even more $ with NIL, but the kid still has to come to school and work hard - not a popular selling point these days. Also, ND cannot take take Transfer Portal players as undergrads (90% of them) if they a) went to a school that ND does not accept transfer credits from, b) are taking classes in a major that ND does not deem legitimate education, and c) the player is on track to graduate in 4 years. That is why we have only grad transfers and the few undergrad transfers are from good schools (which are almost always nonfootball-focused schools).
So, first of all, you wrongly aim your target at Marcus Freeman. He is not above criticism, but to your point, it is Notre Dame who is choosing to take the academic and moral high ground that inhibits us.
Your questions come down to:
Is winning so important to Notre Dame that it wants to drop it's standards drastically to compete with Alabama and Georgia? And...
Is winning so important to Notre Dame that it want to sell its' soul and cheat like Michigan?
The answer to both questions is "No". Some fans with no care for the school might disagree, but we alumni are in strong support of our school and our program. We are better than that. We MUST be better than that.
I wonder how Coach Freeman would do at his alma mater? My guess is that he’d get a top three class annually,
