Yes, I get player safety. I'm not opposed to the penalty so much as how it's arbitrarily applied and I don't like kicking a player out of the game.
Ninety percent of the time a player is trying to avoid the targeting, but often the offensive player moves his head into the targeting position after the defensive player has started his tackling motion. And often it's ambiguous if the letter of the rule was actually violated but it seems even in these cases they still call and uphold targeting.
At the very least, end the ejection penalty and only disqualify the player for the rest of the series.
leverage position. When it is egregious like the Texas hit against Tori Hunter was that ruined his career, it has to be called.
