The PI call was against a Texas DB, bottles rained down on the field from the Texas student section, and then, after deliberation, the PI call was reversed.
Is the moral of the story this?: Trash the field if you want to get the call reversed. After all, the officials want to get home in one piece, don't they?
Georgia's HC, Kirby Smart, was outraged, and said that this set a bad precedent for college football. And he's right!
The official who made the call is the only person who can reverse the call, and after video review, he "saw the light" and did just that.
The replay shows that the DB was holding onto the receiver just before they separated. It WAS PI and should not have been reversed! (Of course, the dumbass "expert" official with the broadcast crew didn't see it that way. Those idjits get it wrong more often than right).
It could be argued that there was " hand play" involved by both parties, and there was, but was the crowd at such a fever pitch, that discretion became the better part of valor?
Why would you want to ruin a good game with a riot? That ain't cool!
All of this begs the question of what is pass interference these days. Defensive backs have been getting away with more and more: Colliding with the receiver before the ball actually gets there; the ubiquitous jersey grab, running receivers out of bounds on deep balls, draping the back arm around the receiver, etc.
And sometimes there is mutual pass interference, too.
Mothers, don't let your sons grow up to be football officials!

After the play, the referee went to a monitor and had a headset on. The Raiders gathered around the ref, and George said he heard the ref ask, "How good is the security here?"
After he got his answer, he took the headset off and signaled touchdown.
I could see Atkinson saying that as a joke. That is a common joke in today's age, used in many forms. But, video replay did not come into use to confirm or reverse calls until many years after that play. Love your contributions Mark, but you lose a lot of credibility if you believe that story. And, if you are just repeating a joke, the fact that you quote George Atkinson for it, is kind of silly also, as it is a common joke. No offense
The referee did get on the phone and consulted with an NFL official, Art McNally. Why would he do that? He then came back and signalled touchdown.
The Raiders still to this day the ref went over to ask about security, but it does appear no Raiders were near the ref when he made this call.
And why shoot the messenger? I'm just reporting what Atkinson told me.
headsets when there is a concern for their safety. I thought it was funny that you relayed that story as if Atkinson had cracked some important conspiracy. No big deal Mark
They are forced to count it as a loss to Georgia Southern instead of Georgia

They will hit a cheerleader, NBC camera operator, stadium usher, and an occasional police officer. Some make it to the ND bench. The students also have thrown plastic bottles though none of this stupidity is on the same level as what happened at Texas.
