He was never "pushed out" either overtly or subtly.

Is he an every down RB, a change of pace RB, a slot receiver, a kick returner with side benefits, etc etc?

He got his degree and decided he needed to hear a different voice and went somewhere else to do so.

He never moved like a RB from day one...aside from blazing speed, he didn't have anything you want in a high level college RB.

But a guy with good hands and elite speed can make you a lot of money as a college WR.

If he is good enough and interested in the pros, his ideal position is 3rd down back, slot receiver, kick returner.

Had he made that switch at ND, he might be playing in the pros today. Rather than gaining expertise by focusing on only one strong skill set, he became a "jack of all trades, master of none."

Dude was our leading receiver in the first year playing the position and was a legit threat in the return game.

Take almost any scenario where QBs or 5th years have left... similar to Tyree. The resounding answers have always been something like, "we appreciate your time here, you have your degree, but we're going a different direction."

To your point, this was a bad coaching move IMO in Tyree's case as he could have been easily as productive as Harrison and Mitchell. And, as an injured player at UVA this season, his stats align with theirs. What Tyree offered these guys do not was his leadership, his having been at ND forever and not having to relearn a new place. This would have been a key thing that could have benefited this team and the younger WRs. His ability to show younger guys the ropes and the ND ropes could have been like having an extra coach. A player that has proven to be productive on Saturday's at ND in the past.

I have no idea, but it's hard to imagine that with the WR mass exodus and house cleaning that took place last year, that ND was saying or giving the vibe that they were extremely grateful to have Tyree coming back.

Based on the shambles of that room, it is hard to buy into the staff considering him playing meaningful minutes and being a meaningful contributor in 2024.

Could Tyree have been offered better NIL money? Sure. Could he have known RL was what he is, probably. Could he have wanted to go play back at home? Maybe.

But, putting together the situation in that room, seeing the exodus at that position and seeing coaches (specifically at ND) reach in the portal and fall victim to "the grass is always greener". I'd put my money on he was "pushed out", by the staff not being as excited about Tyree as who they saw in the portal, and they likely didn't portray that in his anticipated role either.

Remember, there are plenty of past cases of this. So, is it conjecture? Yes. Does it align with the scientific method? Abosolutely. Could it be wrong 100%, but I'd lay low odds on it.

Typically the "we appreciate your time here, you have your degree, but we're going a different direction." conversations are with guys who were basic non-factors. This doesn't apply to Tyree so I doubt it's what happened.

If we're going to just make stuff up and see what sticks, I'd say it's more plausible that he was one of the players involved in the weed smoking rumors that may have earned Stuckey his sudden exit.

Makes a lot more sense that a Virginia kid would choose to go home with degree in hand to play his final year, than spend another Winter in South Bend with a potential suspension for team rules violations looming.

I highly doubt he was pushed out (words matter), but rather chose to leave for home due to reasons surrounding the situation here that we'll probably never know all the details on.

that I think is more plausible than 'he was pushed out' with the only basis being that other guys have been pushed out.

There are many possibilities as far as why he transfered to UVA...'he was pushed out' is probably the least likely of them all.

And given that he wanted to play his last year close to home.

How can you accurately gauge any receiver when you don't have a QB who can consistently get anyone the ball. I was never impressed with Tyree as a runner, so as a WR his speed would be his biggest asset. But like Faison, without anyone to get him the ball there's no way to know how good any of them really are.

been injured from the get go this year. It's been disappointing given the talent he has.

Chris Tyree has been injured with a significant groin injury for most of this year, to the point where he didn't even play in several games this year.

This holds steady with the trend that he had been somewhat susceptible to injuries throughout his time as a player.

These last two weeks were the first time all year that he has been able to go anywhere near his normal speed.

I have all of the love and respect for the guy, and he showed some truly brilliant flashes while he played for us (especially turning around that Wisconsin game in 2021). Back when he wore #25, he sometimes reminded me of another guy who wore #25.

very similar stats to both Mitchell and Harrison. Those who effectively replaced him.

Harrison and Mitchell are more of WR3 or WR4 players at this point. Their production has been solid for those positions, but not spectacular. Neither are going to wrest the WR1 from Collins or the WR2 from Greathouse at this point.

Yes, I would have much rather had a healthy, 5th year senior Chris Tyree on this squad, since his potential would have been higher, and maybe this could have been the year, but given how his bad luck with that groin injury played out, he has basically been robbed of another opportunity to showcase a full season's worth of talent.

Still, given the QB situation, I'm guessing he wouldn't have had great production with Riley Leonard as the QB, and I doubt Coach Freeman would have moved him back to RB, since it's already quite crowded there in an excellent way.
