1989's team played Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Pitt, Miami, USC, and Colorado, along with a pretty tough Air Force team (#17 when we battled them).
That Michigan State team was much better than their 8-4 record advertised. Their first three losses were to us, Michigan, and Miami, all of which were within one score. Also, that loss to a very good Illinois team (finished #10) was by 4 points.
The most frustrating thing about that season, though, was that we had the ball in Miami's red zone three times, and came away with only 3 points. That game was very much winnable, despite the circumstances.

ND with the same roster playing 13-14 games rather than 9-10
probably would have had more contiguous unbeaten games
Not exactly apples and oranges but rather apple v. more apples.
Never saw the Irish lose while in SB?

Good thing there were no message boards , Inside College Football, ESPN, Big10 / SEC/ ACC Networks, College Football Live or playoff think tanks.
