If you "punch" the ball put - no problem - great play, but if you miss and punch the opposing player - isn't that a 15 yard penalty - punching a player?

Punching a helmet or even shoulder pads hurts worse for the offender... so it is better to be
accurate and hit the ball than to wildly swing. When you miss, it is it's own downside.

I'm not sure what officials are seeing during a game anymore. We need nationalized professional refs
Too much at stake to allow part time officials running around different parts of the country interpeting PI's and targeting diferently depending on their mood swings.
when it works it works, when it doesn't you wish they didn't do it. I assume they go on intent and
most are not trying to actually punch anyone, though it does happen.
It's no different than a late hit out of bounds
The player didn't intend to hit someone late out of bounds - In most cases, he just couldn't hold up and it happened.
This technique was used by my HS team going back to 1970. Suburban teams hated it.
If you think accidently punching a player's arm was bad in an attempt to loosen the ball from the carriers grip, try being on the wrong side of a knee crushing cross body block back then.
