Unless CA turns out to be a diamond in the rough, this is the kind of hire

that can kill a program. BK managed to survive BVG, but that was the exception, not the rule.

Hope I'm 100% wrong on this, but ND has been winning because of great defense. That goes away and things can get ugly with the schedule next year.

ND just came off a title game season, with a great defense leading the way. How the F&*K are they not able to reel in a top DC. It can't be money.

I'm really on the fence about this hire but will trust MF and his ability to hire good coaches.

Last year of success was 2015! This is sad news. Guy has done nothing in the 9 years but fail

I think it's safe to say that Coach Freeman has shown that he's not F'ing around..

which means that either, MF thinks this guy can do the job at a high level, or he was the best we could get for one reason or another.

Our 3rd year HC who just beat three Top 10 teams in the post-season made a decision..he'll be right or he'll be wrong, but if you trust him there is no point in fretting about it now.

Go Coach Ash..Go Irish!

I am and have been 100% all in on Coach Freeman since day 1, but looking at CA's resume

and career trajectory, this hiring is beyond head scratching.

Hope it pans out for MF's and ND's sake.

In a good way, you have completely bought in vs. from the start of this season.

Can he coach, recruit, keep existing players, esp if Mickens bolts?

Hard to say. Plus Marcus was a DC, so you’d hope D doesn’t slip.

If it does, Marcus bought himself a few more years with the national title game & Coach of the year.

I rolled my eyes when Golden was hired, seeing it as evidence that Freeman as HC was a mistake.

Golden was an NFL position coach following his dismal performance as HC at Miami and I thought we were going to see a rerun of the BVG disaster. Didn't turn out that way. It's not a science, so hopefully this works out. One thing, if Mickens stays as a co-DC, the defense will be led by 2 highly regarded DB coaches.

And Mickens is staying!

I hope he's getting the elevation he deserves. As a fan of ND for a LOOONG time, the DBs have never been as good as they've been with Mickens. From spotting talent to coaching them up, he's elevated the defense.

What an uninspired hire. May have been the only available option,

but hiring a guy who's only career success was with a loaded Urban Meyer/Luke Fickell led OSU is not confidence inspiring. His career looks BVG-esque, a couple successes and a lot of failures with a recent downward trajectory.

PSU steals Knowles from OSU and ND hires a scout from one of the worst NFL teams. Not good.

His story is remarkably similar to Al Golden’s when we hired him.

Don't agree with this at all. Yes, AG had lower key jobs, but he was successful at them.

Miami had gotten hammered by the NCAA when he took over there, so no one was going to be successful there, at that time. Bad choice on his part and maybe he's not HC material, nothing wrong with that.

CA has had several opportunities and failed miserably at most of them. The fact that he was reduced to being a scout for the Jags, from the opportunities he had been given previously, is very indicting. His career was heading toward used car salesman and ND just made him their DC.

His resume screams of someone that should be looking for a new profession, similar to BVG, not someone who should be hired as DC of a top 10 program.

Hope I'm proven to be 100% wrong, but this was make a splash time for ND and MF, similar to what PSU did. Great season, on the cusp of being a perennial NT contender, tons of love from the media, money to buy the best of the best......and the best they can do is hire a guy who was one step from being out of the profession.

I thought his defenses were tough & good tacklers.

I want our D to be strong against the run.

I’d like a running play against our D to be a wasted down.

I prefer a strong & dominant defensive line.

Hopefully this comes to fruition this fall.

God bless & Go Irish 🍀🍀🍀

But as others have mentioned, I’ll trust that Coach Freeman knows what he’s looking for in a new DC.

Yeah, I’ll give MF the benefit of the doubt, but didn't expect this hire.
