Mickens wants to be a DC. If going someplace else gets him there better than staying at ND, he'll leave.
If he is going to be named a "Co - DC," then he will get a raise.
But he isn't chasing for $$.
Mickens and Freeman go all the way back to their high school days at Wayne HS in Dayton. If Marcus wants Mickens to stay, I have to think he'll ensure it happens.
The job is identified as the Safeties Coach. Currently he is the DB coach and defensive pass game coordinator. It doesn't seem this is going to enhance his goal of being a DC since Texas is already loaded with "DCs" ala a "Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Secondary," a "Defensive Coordinator," and a " Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers."
He isn't leaving for this role as "career advancement" per se as opposed to getting out of Dodge because 1) he was passed over for DC and/or 2) he has decided he doesn't fit with the new DC for whatever reason. I understand why he would feel that way.
And no, he isn't leaving over $$ since that seem to be the small- minded approach too many take here every time somebody leaves.
A lateral move but we just got PSU RB coach that way.
