All he did every time he played was play at a very high level. I don't think the coaches ever gave him a fair shot.

He's definitely not chopped liver, and would have been a quality starter for us.

Mike Denbrock would have tailored the offense to reflect his throwing skills, and with our having a more serviceable receiving corps compared to last year, he would have done just fine. He can make all of the short and medium range throws with accuracy and timing, with reasonably good zip on the ball, and his long ball is actually decent as well.

I would have pictured him in a similar offense to what we ran in 2021 with Jack Coan, but Angeli being much more mobile, and the offensive line being better (despite our starting a lot of freshmen and sophomores).

I'll also be grateful to Angeli stepping in when Leonard was banged up and unable to take the field for a series or two. He performed, and kept us in the Penn State game.

This is not to take anything away from Riley Leonard, though. The man played his guts out for us in 2024, and got us to the finals. I'll always be grateful for his service as well.

He's graduating, and has 2 years left to play.

He was a great ND back-up QB.

He came in as an early enrollee. Between that extra spring semester along with summer school, he'll have plenty of credits to graduate.

Every news outlet is calling him a grad transfer, so that means he'll have received his degree from ND when he leaves.

Angeli wouldn't be leaving if he was told he was #1.

Freeman is not the type to say "we'll see in the fall" ala Kelly to keep guys around.

Whether Angeli is #2 or #3, makes little difference to him I suspect. He's got his degree and has a great future ahead.

Right now, it looks like the following:

QB1 = Carr
QB2 = Minchey
QB3 = Herbert
QB4 = ?

And interesting "back-pocket" option.

Hopefully, it won't become necessary. But in the event that it does (knock on wood...), he would have significant experience in the scheme.

If Carr gets the nod and he's truly as good as everyone says, unless he gets injured, Minchey's career as a QB is over. I can't see him staying at ND knowing that. My belief is that Minchey gets the start. He fits the Denbrock mold and I think it's an easier sell to get Carr to wait his turn than to tell Minchey he's done and go into 2025 without a backup QB.

Liberty is an opportunity for doing good, but only when it is also an opportunity for doing wrong...

If the coaches believe it's Carr, they are not going to start Minchey with the thought that Carr is

more likely to accept the back up role. That would be unfair to both, and Freeman is not the guy that would do that. It's also a good way for a coach to fail and lose his own job. If Minchey bolts then so be it. They would have to roll with the younger QBs.

Thread Level: 3

Minchey won't. They will develop a red zone package for him.

Big arm for downfield throws and good athleticism are the traits Tennessee looks for.

Without dissing Angeli, he doesn't have a big arm, and while he isn't as unathletic as perhaps Hartman, I wouldn't give him high marks for athleticism. If he had either or both of those traits, he'd wouldn't be in the portal.
