Carr already had a great command of a relatively complex passing offense in high school, and ran it from multiple formations.
To be fair, Mirer ran a very conservative power option offense, and never ran a shotgun snap in a game at ND.
A couple of the linemen from that era did tell me that they had worked on some shotgun snaps when Skip Holtz was the OC, but they never ran it during the games.
He was a big step up from Tony Rice as a thrower, though, and still ran the option very well. He already had 4 times as many passing TD's as Rice did in the year before.
