Is more to it than that. These kids are also excellent football players and need to have a program strong in both education and football development AND a coach that believes in and is committed to both. And a staff that shares that commitment.
Freeman has surrounded himself with a great staff and people that buy into his visions for the program. A supportive AD and president also help this cause
I freely admit I was ready to have the guy fired after that humiliation. But I was wrong. He took it like a man, faced the challenge, and came through with a legitimate chance at a title. Whatever else he does, that season will stand as a very fine achievement. Looking forward to this year.

Kelly is a loser.
humble enough to learn from his mistakes.
Contrast the changes Marcus Freeman implemented after each difficult loss vs Kelly who stubbornly insisted on his way - even to the point of kelly once of throwing the ball 43 times during a full blown hurricane because he felt that it "should" work..

That's one of the biggest differences between the team under his command versus the teams under Brian Kelly's command.
If someone makes a major mistake, Coach Freeman is willing to give that player another shot, and willing to coach him through it. Players are much more at ease when it comes to cutting loose, knowing that they don't have to walk on eggshells.
Brian Kelly would simply banish you to the bench, while installing one of his "right kind of guys" at that position instead. The only way you'd get another shot is if the RKG ended up injured and unable to go.

he seemed to think the difference making players were prima donnas and not worthy of his time and (lack of) effort.
