....this surprised me, Whittingham; Utah puts up 63 on Cal Poly. Do they assume that the selection committee will take these "wins" against such inferior teams as solid data points come playoff time??

Always been part of the college game. Especially when you get beat playing real teams. It encourages
big schools to take out underperformance on little schools. They should stop allowing the scheduling TBH.
There has to be some pressure to put in backups and let them play. With the transfer rules now
Perhaps coaches have to let the kids play.
Not suggesting it’s a good idea but it does seem to be very common these days.
I doubt it makes any negative impact
Beating those weak teams by 50+ doesn't really help your final point count in the eyes of the computers, any more than beating them by 30 or so.
After all, ETSU is FCS, so that kind of a beatdown is expected against any reasonably good FBS team.
ULM is a mediocre Sunbelt team, and almost always gets blown out (3 TD or more) by any stronger team in the better conferences.
I don't think that those beatdowns will be a black mark when it comes to the human evaluations of the teams, since each of those better teams have the opportunity to prove themselves against real competition on their schedules.
Besides, when you have that kind of a gap when it comes to talent and coaching, it starts looking more like that hapless 1989 SMU team when we played them. Lou ordered the 4th stringer and walk-on guys to stop trying to score on offense, and on defense, to play very loosely in 4Q, and we still scored some.
