Freeman said that a lot post-game, in defense of Ash.
I hope that's just his public talking point, and not private.

I don't think he's throwing anyone under the bus. If coaching were just play calling a computer could do it.

We never could cover their WR in the middle of he field. Sorry Marcus -- that's not execution, that's scheme.
This is where Golden was so good -- if another team had success during their opening drive, he immediately adjusted to take away whatever it was that was working for the opponent. Ash hasn't shown that.
You often see no one within 5 yds of the QB and at least two receivers with no one within on 5 yards of them. And we have multiple defenders playing zone who are no where near any A&M player. Literally 15 yards away from any A&M player. It boggles the mind how we are hiding 11 players on defense away from where the ball is and where it is going.

shit show.
the hard challenging questions.
the coach's cadence.
If you've listened to one you've heard a million. Both the questions and the answers.

He also ran a pretty aggressive defense as DC and HC until this year.
If not, my guess is they'd not be playing it, nor hired Ash. And this defense sure seems like a bend don't break. And they're certainly not running Golden's scheme, or style.
Tressel's defense was conservative, a "bend-but-don't-break" approach. He focused on minimizing mistakes, but the problem here is ND isn't even fundamentally sound defensively. So it's a poor man's Tressel ball.
I get a lot of the criticism around MF this year, but calling his style "Tressel ball" does not make sense to me based on the facts.
The greatest show on turf. Nor did last year. The regular season passing yards per game was 178.8. I think Tressel would think that's peachy.
Ohio State under Tressel had an average of approximately 203.6 passing yards per game.
And I'm sure he'd love the 2023 run approach.
But yes, against A&M that was not so Tressely.
Instincts should kick in with the veterans. Athletic ability should too. The players are to be scrutinized too.
plays. Why did the same players tackle well last year and not this year. Why did the same players play violently and aggressively last year and not this year? Why is the scheme so passive this year compared to last year. Players have to make plays but coaches have to drill fundamentals and scheme to the team's strength. It could also be that players, for some reason or another, don't like playing for their new coach. Motivating players is also very important.
Also, on a side note, MF seems pleased with the wildcat so I don't think we've seen the last of it. When asked about Kenny getting involved in the wildcat, MF didn't say no but he did not say yes.
made against Georgia that caused a fumble in the Sugar Bowl last year. This year targeting was called and I think that is bullshit. Remember also, the refs gave them 8 more plays on questionable calls when we had them in fourth down and goal situations twice.
