Didn't he leave in January? After most teams had their DC hires made. Few options left. And didn't Golden just ink a new contract with ND the prior February? Golden kind of screwed them if that's the case.
ND was basically sitting there buzzed, at a bowling alley bar during last call. Stuck choosing between a girl with a mullet and tramp stamp, and one with a FUPA and Ash tray breath.

OSU hired Patricia in February. There were still DC's out there, whether they had gigs or not.
It was make a splash time for MF and ND and they hired a dud. Not just a dud, but a dud that was known to be a dud.
