With all the guys coming back, and the young talent I thought they'd be better. Shows what I know.
Seems like a colossal F up occurred.
But this has been a bumpy ride.
On FNS (football never sleeps) both said if we still had Golden as DC we’d likely be 2-0 (for the record, it’s an awesome question one we all ask ourselves as we lie awake at night, but no one knows for sure)
What we do know is that when Golden was here we had an elite defense.
It is my hope that maybe ND can try to get Golden to return somehow.
I do think this in today’s college football coordinators are more important than ever. With recruiting, portal, NIL, media commitments, the HC has a ton on his plate.
Also, might I add, you probably want to hire someone who’s doing the job you are trying to fill, aka coaching at XYZ U or NFL team.
Also, I add that at a place like ND, or other big programs, if you have someone who’s got it rolling like Golden, do everything you can to keep them, my guess is they tried, but he wanted a new challenge.
Just my 2 cents, as always I could be wrong 🍀🍀🍀

But this is a total collapse of standard of play. I think we were helped by the pressure we could put on teams with our linebackers and interior linemen last year. Ash’s scheme relies on putting pressure with front 4 which we already knew we were lacking experience and talent.

A top 10 D shouldn't slip to bottom quartile unless you put 18 guys in the NFL OR your new DC is a complete incompetent.
Not a complete dumpster fire.

optimism. When it's really a bad situation, you get blindsided.

never thought the defense could suck this bad with everyone back and all the reports of this team being the deepest talent wise in quite a real long time. I feel like it’s mid September and the season is already over. It’s very frustrating. While I think they are capable of running the table, I just don’t see it happening this year. I hope I’m wrong.

With MF, Mickens, Bullough and Washington still on staff I figured it would be a year before we saw a decline.
BVG would be proud.

he simply doesn't get how to put players in position to succeed.
As Mike Golic Sr. said years ago "Sometimes you know what you're being asked to do isn't going to work, but you have to go out there and battle your ass off to try to win anyways".
That's what Ash is doing, putting the Dlinemen and DB's in position to fail.
And we make it our primary defense? That's just stupidity. If anything work it in against teams you can afford to "practice" against.
Sure you need to be able to run it. But until you can, don't live or die by it. And the biggest problem with running it is they are nowhere near the WR letting them run loose. Who taught that garbage? You hit then as they get the ball, like Tony Dungy's teams did.
