Brian Kelly is the kind of coach who has a high floor for certain, that he can help build up a program to a point where you can be very good.
I'd even argue that he's a safe choice if you're looking to keep your team at a very good level.
However, his ceiling isn't much higher than his floor.
While he was at ND, he finished the rebuilding job that Charlie Weis started, and even got us to the point where we were regularly contending for a top 10 position.
Contending with the top 5, though, was something he couldn't do on a consistent basis, even in Kelly 2.0. The way Clemson and Alabama manhandled us in the playoffs showed that we weren't going to take that next step.
Yes, I'm still irritated at leaving for his shekels of silver in 2021, especially since his leaving could very well have cost us a playoff spot, but in the end, Coach Freeman has shown that we have a significantly higher ceiling.
Also, the fact that Marcus Freeman still managed to get a 9 win and 10 win season in 2022 and 2023 with a less than ideal roster, shows that he can make the best of a bad situation.
Nothing personal. Just business.
