ND vs SC: The Phone War (before caller ID and cell phones)
I grew up in a Chicago neighborhood full of Notre Dame fanatics—like, “paint your face for a Tuesday practice” level. One of my earliest ND-SC rivalry memories? Pure chaos.
ND was mounting a comeback. Tension was high. The Irish were driving. Suddenly—the phone rings.
My dad, surrounded by me and my brothers, yells:
“WHO THE HELL CALLS DURING ND-SC?! WHO DOES THAT?!”
Then barks:
“Pick it up and hang it up!”
So I did.
📞 Click.
30 seconds later—ring again. Dad’s now boiling:
“Who the F is that?! Pick it up and hang it up!”
📞 Click.
Another 30 seconds—ring again. Dad’s reached DEFCON 1:
“Pick it up and find out what the hell they want!”
I answer.
“Dad... it’s Mom. She wants to know why we keep hanging up on her.”
True story. Rivalry games bring out the best in us... and the worst in our phone etiquette.
