A few swing and misses.

If by "in the mix" you mean "in their dreams".
By all Accounts Kelly was their top choice amongst realistic candidates and I've seen no record of anyone "better" even considering an interview.
Jumbo re-confirmed his commitment to aTm at the time.
Kelly was next available. If Kelly was always LSU's top choice among realistic candidates...that makes Swarbrick's unpreparedness look even dopier than it did.

Pretty vindictive now about someone you wanted here forever...

I don't know how far any of those discussions ever got, though. It's entirely possible that Kelly was their third choice.
This time around, the no-brainer is Lane Kiffin, since he has shown he can win in the SEC with fewer resources. They're going to have to pony up a lot of money, though, since Florida is after him as well.
There is a dark horse candidate emerging, in the way of Joe Brady (OC for the Buffalo Bills). He was the guy responsible for revolutionizing LSU's offense during their championship year, and elevating Joe Burrow to a god-like status.
Same guy gave Jimbo his huge deal at A&M. Talk about failing upwards.
Often as they should I bet. Especially with their being so much known about high profile coaches like this.
He is also the AD who hired Ty Willingham at Washington Huskies after he left ND which was a complete disaster.....
He seems to have followed Emmert to a lot of places, which explains the failing upwards.
Both those guys could F up a cup of coffee, yet kept getting better and more lucrative jobs.

LSU fans can't be very comforted by that.
