...the idea that you need to join a conference. Other than maybe the big 10. Just line up and play a bunch of group of 5 schools and you're in every year with a 12 game preseason. The whole argument about playing a conference championship sure seems to have been deep sixed as well.
What's their top win this year Texas, who has struggled to maintain a two loss record? Beyond that they've played bottom feeders.

They beat Texas when Texas was #1 at the time, and they beat a good ranked Illinois team recently.
They're playing very well right now, and until someone shows that they can be more dominating, tOSU belongs up there at #1.
They should basically sweep the rest of their schedule, although Michigan may give them some trouble.

...sort of my point. Nearly everyone in the top 10 has proven their metal but OSU.
Michigan's offense is anemic, but their defense is very good.
I honestly don't think that what we saw in the USC vs Michigan game is a true indicator of each team's consistent performance (USC isn't quite as dominant, and Michigan isn't quite as bad). Both teams should be ranked later on, and that day just happened to have Lady Luck throwing USC more than a few favors.
But, I do see where you're coming from, that at this time, the win over Texas that pushed them into the #1 spot looks a lot more tarnished now, and doesn't quite have the same hype that it did at the beginning of the year. That's a fair assessment.
Still, by regular season's end, there is more than a fair chance that the wins over Texas and Washington will have a bit more luster, since both teams should also be ranked at that time, barring some complete meltdown by either.

It happens.
Can't lament this stuff too much anymore. There are playoffs...

lots of dominoes have to fall in place to make the playoffs.
something to do with it?
I dunno but on your same note ND hasn’t beaten anyone of worth and has lost 2 games and are still ranked number 12 - care to comment on that?
And ND has has played a tougher schedule than OSU even outside of those 3.
OSU has played nobody and will play nobody all year until the conference championship that won't count for standings purposes.
That OSU admittedly probably has a decent team does not excuse playing zero competition and walking into a playoff as a top seed..
This is especially the case when you schedule the Ohio U. & Gramblings of the world on top of an already weak Big 10 schedule. What are we calling 4-4 Rutgers, 3-4 Penn St., 2-6 Wisconsin, 2-6 Purdue, and 3-5 UCLA quality wins this year? That's 7 of their games right there. They don't even play the best teams in their own conference in Oregon, Indiana, USC, or Iowa.
Seriously why even bother playing a regular season? They shouldn't even be considered for the playoffs without a qualifying schedule. Put them in the SEC and they'd have 3 losses by now.
If playing UM, Minn. and Washington every year equates to a playoff bid, I'd take that all day long. I'd argue ND's 2 losses count for more than any of OSU's wins this year. And it's not the first time OSU has played this kind of schedule. Last year they started with Akron. W. Mich., and Marshall.
with their remaining games. It’s not that I think the OSU schedule is difficult it’s that I don’t see your argument as anything but a “so what” as the important ranking, which is basically created on the “eye test” along with scheduling, comes out next week. It’s possible IU gets the top nod seeing they’ve had a more difficult schedule with a 1 loss Alabama at 2. It’s possible ND will fall to 20 because of their 2 losses in this first ranking.
All the committee knows is OSU is slightly better than #20 Texas. And that ND to start the season was nearly as good as #10 Miami and #3 Texas A&M with a first time starting QB.
where they would be now if not ( #3?).
total to the best of the best is not nearly as good an indicator as pounding on Big 10 sewer dwellers for 12 games. No need to schedule those early tough games. Just line up and play Purdue 12x's. Of course the committee may see it differently than the press or coaches. I could definitely see the committee moving OSU out of a first round bye due to piss poor scheduling.
Matchup.
Someday. the scheduling issues have to be dealt with but they have a few good games each year. Texas as a good out of conference for them. It’s not there fault Texas isn’t having good year either.
Just like our scheduling, we book Clemson and all of a sudden they tank this year. Who knows if it’s a blip or a permanent thing. When we signed on they looked like a strong annual game. But the days of 7 or 8 gauntlet games are gone other than a few SEC teams and how the schedule breaks
...if you play nobody. If your schedule ends up being slightly better than a SWAC schedule. That and the the 2nd point is the Big 10 is hot garbage outside of Indiana, OSU, and Oregon.
So play an out of conference schedule that's at least decent just in case your big 10 "powerhouses" like perrenially overrated PSU and UM stink as usual. Alternatively, they should find OSU is not bye eligible. Didn't pass or even take "the eye test".
Sure you can't blame them for Texas. But you can blame them outside of that for scheduling 2 potentially competitive games a year in PSU and UM, and then arguing that the conference championship shouldn't count if they lose. ND's schedule took a hit due to Boise being less stellar, but they didn't just schedule Boise they also had A&M, Miami, and USC. Win or lose, at least you played the game as opposed to a glorified scrimmage.
I used to knock Bama playing Lamar or citadel, but dang their schedule is ridiculously hard compared to OSU.
Personally I think Indiana will beat them. Not that Indiana is great, just better than what they're used to playing. OSU barely handled a weak Texas team.
