That was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. ND had multiple guys blowing up that play.
ND was going to get the ball on a turnover on downs.
The facemask to my knowledge never happened.
Terrible, terrible call. Refs gave the opposition a fresh set of downs that much closer to goalline.

I get that in a millisecond he saw the helmet “move”… but the ref’s friggin’ job is to be better than the average Joe at that.

My understanding is that they are supposed to call what they actually see...
...not interpolate from what they saw (no penalty) to what they did not see (penalty) based on motion of players as they go down. I recall a phantom facemask/horse collar from earlier in the season or late last season (don't recall which game) when a player spun as he was tackled...penalty called, but replay showed a clean tackle. The announcers discussed this very concept. Were they (the announcers / penalty expert dude) wrong????? [Question for all, not necessarily TTTK. 😉]
