How delicious would it be if U of M and USC go independent?

That would eviscerate all the trolling about ND's not being in a conference.

That might be a step toward an SEC superconference. Which would be an abomination.

Why is it that so many people want to make college football like the NFL?

Let alone even go to college. Why wouldn’t they treat it just like an NFL team and not give a shit about the school, the academics, the reputation?

Thread Level: 3

Well so far it has been successful because the playoffs make it much better.

I don’t know why this board has such a hard time realizing the old days of college football are never coming back.

The constant money-grubbing will kill this sport if we let it. Already lots of changes have been made by people who don't understand what makes the sport great.

No more.

BTW, Prof can take care of himself. I don't understand why he needs to be protected.

I also think maybe he has a sense of humor.

And I know nothing about Tulane other than it’s probably fun to attend.

The change of handles for you (twice) is evident. The unanswered question is “why.” I mean everyone has know you’re insane for years, others discussing it at length much more than I, but that is a puzzle.

But, yes, you’re new here but just happen to know about posters that posted 20 years ago.

You do little on this board except offer occasional snark potshots.

I lurked on this board for many years before I posted . I fully admit I know GOAT. I wish I was his equal.

If you know nothing about Tulane why would you
question my assertions?

Can you refute any of them?

Or are you just entertaining your obsession with

I don't think old college football is coming back. It's not.

Don't necessarily see that "new college football" is working out all that well however...except maybe for a limited few.

Was there a need for a minor league of professional teams ultimately pretending they are affiliated with universities in an increasingly tenuous way?

I guess we'll all find out. Stay tuned...

For example: finding revenue options outside of the norm, partnerships with companies/naming rights and pro-sports teams, recruitment revenue incentives at the high school level, etc.... would this be easier at the INDEPENDENT level, or make it harder?

For ND, I think they have the flexibility, connections, and brand to pull it off; but few others could.

To your point:

- maybe USC with the LA/Hollywood connections, but they are a dumpster fire currently. (They are one bad loss away from firing their coach and starting all over.)

- Michigan could but I don't think they have the leadership/coach to turn it into wins without Harbaugh(cheating).

- The SEC teams (Texas, Alabama, Georgia) are sold on the SEC and too invested/dependent on the ESPN/media propping up the SEC to go alone.

Now that would be a good nucleus - Add ND and cherry pick for all the best reasons - academics as well as athletics (all sports and some not so powerful powerhouses) - ND, Michigan, USC, Texas, Florida, NC, Va, Purdue, Miami, Stanford, Duke, and SMU make for a balanced, national, academic, wealthy and powerful 12-team league. (add Cal or Georgia and subtract others, no big whup). Think the next 50 years, not just today. Stick with an 8-game slate and that allows these schools to keep their traditional rivalries.

Schedule long term home and home on our terms. These are the teams we are meant to play.
Throw in Clemson if they shake off their funk and strength of schedule becomes a non issue as usually there a couple ACC teams that at pretty good and we'll get them fairly often.
