The bigger question would be how do get to 10. I think that is easier then us being 8.
I know 8 means hosting a playoff game but I don’t think that happens. So being 10 might be better because of the playoff path.

There are, at most, two open spots.
We need USC to beat Oregon, hope that the Big 12 doesn't warrant 2, hope that A&M makes it to the Champ game and probably Miami to lose only one game.
If Miami gets to the ACC champ game and loses, we are in deep shit. No matter the eye test, it will be hard to justify ND in over Miami.

Miami has a remote shot at making it to the ACCCG.
Miami is not going to lose to VT or PITT. USC is not going to beat OR. We need OK and AL to lose again, and TT to win the B12.

That sounds awkward grammatically but it is what I’m trying to say. If all of those things don’t happen, Notre Dame could be in trouble. If at least one or two does we should be golden potentially even back door into a first round game hosting.

Indiana beats OSU in conference title game
The Indiana becomes the one seed and the 8-9 avoids Ohio State. Otherwise, Bama passes us for the 9 slot.
I would not sell IU short on making this happen.
