What is the thinking around JP's return next year? I have to think he will depart for the NFL but selfishly hope he returns.

It's a really difficult question for him.

He'd probably get $1.5-$2MM next year at Notre Dame. If the confidence level is high that he'd be a Day 2 pick in the draft, that's about what he'd get per year on a rookie contract. Maybe he could get a couple of those seasons guaranteed, so if so, locking in $3-4MM in guaranteed money could be smart, especially with a potential injury risk next season.

The risk of leaving early is that he could feasibly be drafted much lower. Then he'd be foregoing the N.I.L. money he'd have made for less money in the pro's with no guarantees, and basically have to hope that he's in a situation where he can earn a good second contract.

It's a good kind of problem for him to have.

He also has to factor in all the benefits that accrue to being the featured back at Notre Dame. He'd almost certainly be a pre-season All American and would get some Heisman attention. While by all accounts he is a quality kid who is very unselfish, he can't help but notice all of the - ahem - love and NIL opportunities that Jeremiyah has gotten.

He is currently #3 in the nation for Yards / Carry by RBs. Jeremiyah is #1.

If it were me, I'd probably stay one more year and get an insurance policy.

I'd get my $2MM in N.I.L. and my degree. Injury is a risk, but if my draft grade were Day 2, I'd get an insurance policy to cover that. Stay healthy and play well, and you are likely to only increase potential draft grade and then at worst get the same type of contract for a Day 2 draftee a year later with $2MM more in my pocket.

I can certainly see both arguments, however.

Perhaps there are other considerations than $$$$.

1. What's his graduation status?
2. Maybe he likes college.
3. Maybe he'd like a chance to be the #1 back.
4. Maybe he'd like to win a NC.

But I think you have the money topic well covered.

You are always playing for the 2nd contract anyhow and he would start on every other team in the top 10. Ohio State would love to have him now.

He's a 2nd/3rd round pick right now. He's the favorite to win the Heisman if he returns.

Jadarian is great but several others would be the favorites to win the Heisman.

A healthy Jeremiah Smith for example.

Best decision for him would be to go pro

He's a Day 2 pick right now which probably is his draft ceiling. He'll be attractive for having low mileage. Barring a very good NIL package, he doesn't need to risk an injury next year in college.

But I'm with you, I'd love to have him back for another year.

NIL $ would be better than Day 2 salary, no?

As primary ball carrier for the Irish, I would think his stock would only go up.

He could sign a 3 or 4 year contract. He would be betting on moving up if he stayed.
