The committee didn't screw ND last week. They screwed Miami

Their stance that losing a conference championship game doesn't lose your spot in the playoff if you were already in prior (barring a team winning its way in such as BYU could have this year and Clemson did last year) does make sense...sort of. We all understand the principle that earning the right to play an extra game shouldn't be penalized.

But the committee did exactly that in 2017 when Auburn beat Alabama and was ranked #4 by the committee, Alabama #6. But Auburn lost to Georgia in the SEC championship game and the committee punished Auburn by dropping them out of the top 4.

So there is precedent to move Alabama out this year and let Miami in.
