"Join a Conference" is such a lazy and ignorant take.

Why is Notre Dame the only team in college football expected to do something that would be detrimental to their program?

Tie breaker rules completely screwed up their chances to get a team in.

No thanks. I’ll stay independent.

Every program does what's in their best interest financially. If joining a conference was in ND's best interest, it would join one. If being independent were more beneficial to other teams, they would be independent.

Why this is controversial is beyond me. Are people this fucking dense? Every program does what is in their best interest. Period.

People are idiots. It is weird that people are so obsessed with this point & ND.

Either they are willfully ignorant or they are just truly ignorant. Some of these guys I would expect better of them (Klatt, McElroy. , McDonough, Palmer, Macafee). They are missing the point about Miami / Bama as it relates to ND and they completely disregard Tulane / JMU discussion. There is no pushback to these guys. Why is there only one David Pollack? I didn't see it but I guess Bryan Driskell was on with McElroy and old Greg was talking over Bryan the whole time. I'm going to try and find that discussion later.

Because there is no way to refute it..

without resorting to standard phrases like the SEC "gauntlet" that Bama played, or something similar that is basically a hypothetical. How many times did we hear about the 4 consecutive ranked teams Bama faced in the middle of the season? I don't know if Brian Driskell was on with McElroy, but he was on Crain and Company, and at one point they were arguing about whether beating Navy by 39 was better than Alabama winning at Mizzou by 3. They basically yelled at each other for several minutes, making the discussion pointless, but the Crain guy really had no hard stats to back up why beating Mizzou was better than beating Navy, it was basically, "well, they're in the SEC, that's why". Mizzou is apparently a quality win for SEC teams, nevermind that the 8 teams they beat (including 1 FCS team) had a grand total of 30 wins, 20 of which were against FBS teams. They beat the bottom 4 teams in the SEC, those 4 teams have 3 combined conference wins, 2 of which were due to H2H games between the 4.

SEC homers only want to use SOS as the metric to differentiate teams, nevermind that the SEC has perfected the art of manipulating it with weak non-conference schedules and 8 conference games. It is easy to dismiss ND fans as being biased, but when many other podcasts not partial to ND are saying the same thing Nd fans are saying, it gets much harder to deflect from it.

Then why would they stay independent? I assume the ND higher-ups are fairly intelligent and choose the most beneficial path.

That seems pretty logical no? I mean, if it's more beneficial to join a conference it'd be pretty stupid not to.

the administration to be evidence that it is wise.

I don't think the move to ACC has served the basketball teams better than the Big East. I'm a bit heartened and foolishly hopeful that they could return, reading some rumors online.

Marquette and Creighton both way down. It's essentially a three-bid league now. As a Creighton guy, I follow the league. I love the fact they are all basketball schools. ND obviously doesn't fit that bill. Geographically, the ACC never made sense to me.

following the same philosophy as SHrewsberry: eschew bringing in transfers and focus on high schoolers. I don't think that is a viable model. The top teams reload with 22 year-old standouts from elsewhere each and every season. I think it's admirable to try and restore a more "amateur" system, but I think they will be clobbered by the better teams.

Thread Level: 4

So, you two agree: ND should join a conference if it is beneficial to ND.

The fact that ND has not joined a conference so far is not evidence that it will not be beneficial to ND to join one in the future; it is only evidence that it was beneficial in the past.

If the situation changes, so should ND's analysis.

Independence is not an end in and of itself. It is a means to an end.

I assume we all agree on that.

If joining a conference is more beneficial overall for your program than being independent you'd be an idiot not to join.

But i assume that's not currently the case, otherwise ND is being run by a bunch of dipshits.
