….events, besides not having to share football revenue, what is the overarching reason NOT to join a conference?

The risk in joining is: loss of uniqueness and identity, and becoming just another college team

Being average and blending into the crowd is very easy; and the attraction of getting a check for flying on autopilot cannot be denied.

Does a regular paycheck from The Man beat the greater upside and downside of going it alone? Depends on your history, your level of confidence in yourself, and perhaps your prescience as well.

Once you become a member of a collective, don't kid yourself: you've lost part of your specialness and have given up a significant part of your autonomy and self-determination for greater safety. .

With a small alumni base and no longer a national brand, what impact does that have?

The world is different now so maybe it doesn’t matter? I don’t know the answer. But that’s the risk with very little reward (outside of more TV money).

You honestly think that would happen? Wow.

👆This! Why join one of those glops of slop? They are too big and probably not sustainable.

Each conference has too many bottom feeders that just cash checks. (Too many Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins, not enough NY Yankees)

The other less tangible reason is the Nebraska effect resulting in brand dilution and a deteriorating product.

Imposing corporate abuse, neglect and greed on deserving victims.
