He’s eligible for a fifth year. But he retired. Will ND still pay for the extra year of education?
And almost every player is expected to do that in 4 years. No player is guaranteed a 5th year of college if they have their degree.
I know that was the policy in 1980 and I would doubt that aspect of it has changed to be more strict…
5 undergraduate years is the rare exception, not the norm. Student-athletes have to apply and get approval for a 5th year of undergraduate course study.
Will there be exceptions? Sure. But, for example, how many 5th year undergrads (who aren't transfers) are there on the current roster? Maybe 1?
Yes they expect you to finish in 4, promote it and give you every opportunity to do so. They will pay for 5th year if it is necessary.
Percentage of Freshman who graduate is a very important statistic to ND admin…across the whole of the student body.
I expect the Admin despises what college football is morphing into from an academic perspective…
98% of 5th year players are grad students and/or have their undergraduate degrees
If anything, an injury red-shirt make it easier to graduate in 4 years, not harder.
As I stated you were expected and encouraged to graduate in 4. The scholarship paid for 5 years if needed…or would pay for grad school if you were a red shirt who had completed your undergrad degree.
“Notre Dame has historically allowed (and still does) football players to return for a 5th year, often using graduate school for an extra year of eligibility, with scholarships for tuition, room & board covered as part of their aid.”
I'm not sure what your point is here.

if he attends on a non-athletic scholarship, then he is ineligible to play football. Conversely, if he attends and pays his own way, then he could play.
