Even coaches are paid via private funds. At Alabama the coach is paid primarlity via a foundation
I had a fascinating conversation with the head of HR from Alabama a few years ago. Basically no public $ or student tuition goes to the football team. It is either revenue from team, or foundation money that comes from private parties.
The set-up provided her close to zero control over the football program. Saban at the time effectively was funded by a booster foundation. He and his staff were not really "employees" of the University.

This is getting complicated...NIL is that 3rd party endorsement stuff, then there's revenue sharing
that's supposed to be TV, tickets, and merch revenue
The part that i think you're asking about this that collective stuff, which i think is supposed to be funded by boosters.
