unbeaten and top ranked michigan state when he dislocated his shoulder getting off the train in east lansing and was declared physically unable to play. it was a devastating blow and the irish had to go with a significantly scaled down offensive game plan since nick was the core. getting a tie in that battle of heavyweights was a huge tribute to ara and that team. they were appropriately rewarded with the natty.

nick was a great player and a great man. r.i.p.

Interesting.
Thanks for the post.
He’s a few years before my time but still ND stuff I didn’t know so I’ll do research, especially because of where he’s from.

Nick Eddy was my favorite ND player growing up. Probably still is.

I have a Notre Dame vs Northwestern football program dated October 2, 1965 signed by Nick Eddy and a host of Irish players that you all would know. It's in my TV den , framed, and hanging on the wall. The grass I picked from the field is dried but still green. It's in the frame and part of the display. RIP Nick. You are an Irish legend.

Yes, but I read it was a shoulder injury while slipping getting off the train in East Lansing.

Was a student and at the game which is best remember as the debut of Jim Seymour.

However, in what was expected to be a nip and tuck game ND faced a potentially disastrous change in momentum. Early on it was with ND and it looked like we were going to get a TD or FG resulting from a successful drive to take the lead. A pitchout bounced off Rocky Blier and was grabbed in midair by Leroy Keyes who ran well over 90 yards for a TD. A big play was needed and Eddy came through as shown in the video and ND was on its way to a win and the famous matchup with MSU later in the season.

A couple of other well remembered moments too:

-When we played MSU in 64 ND had not won against them since the mid 50s and was facing what would come to be known as a fierce defense ("Kill Bubba Kill" over the next two years). Additionally due to an injury Eddy was going to have to be the go to back if any kind of running game would be established. He scored two TDs and had another one similar to the first long run called back for a very dubious illegal formation penalty.

-The other one was game changing too but memorable as a perfect call at the perfect time to give Eddy an open field. ND vs Navy in 65 with big underdog Navy leading 3-0 just before the end of the first half. ND ran a play that looked like a run pass option toward the Navy sideline with a poorly executed reverse to Eddy as if we were looking for field position to set up a FG. Navy defenders closed like rockets. Suddenly the QB stopped to throw way back across to Nick Eddy standing by himself with a wall of blockers downfield like one would see with a reverse field punt return. The resulting TD lead to a very big second half by ND so the final score didn't look much like how the first half had been played as evidenced by this description of the game:
According to an article in The Voice the following Thursday, Eddy scored on a 55-yard screen pass and Rassas returned a punt 64-yard punt for a TD. The Irish won easily, 29-3.
