I was just reminiscing about Notre Dameβs past bowl game appearances. Curious as to which ones stand out for everyone? I would say the Fiesta Bowl in 1989 was a big one for me. I became a fan for life during that season after pointedly declaring I didnβt like Notre Dame as a result of the Cotton Bowl shellacking a year earlier. Close second was Jerome running wild against Florida.
#1 NOTRE DAME playing in its first ever bowl game - the 1970 Cotton Bowl. As a student in the early 60s read about the 1925 Rose Bowl and wondered if/when a new chapter of program history would begin. BTW even though we lost - it was the embodiment of a near win "against all odds"
#2. The whole 1973 game and the conclusion with an Alabama decision to not go for a 4th and short leaving ND almost in the end zone desperately in need of a first down to keep the clock running. As noted below we got out of that hole and ran out the clock with a well executed long pass to the "other" tight end - probably the least likely receiver from the defensive perspective. BTW was at a College HOF exhibit when it was in SB that used the game as essentially the greatest game of all time for those who love seeing college football at its best. They had highlights that included the ND kickoff return for a TD, forced turnovers, the Alabama pass to its QB for a TD, and of course "the catch."
