With 4000+ kids in the portal, what has happened to the student athlete?

I’m not talking about the quick buck artist or kid who will go pro, but the kid relying on FB to finance his education? Is that notion gone? It seems like of the 4000 kids, a big chunk will lose access to heavily subsidized/free post-secondary education and top tier universities.

The student-athlete has now become the employee-athlete

Are they not getting a scholarship at their new school?

While, for many, finally making a buck?

Very little alma mater relationship vs. mostly short-term leases.

Alma mater, Latin for nurturing mother.

IMHO, it’s a different world. They are compensated. They are professional.

If you want an education, you can still get one ND, Vandy, Stanford BC, etc.

But you can’t have it both ways: these guys are compensated. Everybody who has a job knows it’s about production. If you don’t produce, you can be replaced.

Bottom line, it’s not 1975 anymore.

Thread Level: 3

Maybe that is the harsh reality of it, especially at D1.

But that sucks for kids who aren’t getting paid much, and would like a degree from a school like Notre Dame or Stanford, but effectively get cut and lose their scholarship. Be careful what you wish for I guess.

The definition of f’d up is that Oregon had to move 2 defensive guys to RB because

2 other RBs left the team after entering the portal and 1 guy entered portal but stayed to play to his credit . The starter was hurt but able to play some.

The whole situation is just asinine.

Agree. It seems like it’s begging to get regulated.

But I also think the powers that be don’t necessarily want that

It’s hard to know. SEC wants it regulated I bet

I think we have to look at D3 for the answer to that question.

My grandson plays D3 at a pretty successful program and the players going in know that academics and a part time job goes with the territory. But, come gameday, those players and coaches are locked in just as much as the ND or IU players and staff are.

I think you’re right. My son is looking at colleges.

And he’s probably good enough to play football or lacrosse at one of the Midling to lower D1 schools. But his interest seems to really be in the D2 or more likely D3 schools where he can still focus on education. He knows he’s not good enough to play pro, but wants to continue to play sports in college, but ultimately wants to go into medicine of some sorts and realizes that the D1 commitment plus uncertainty really doesn’t paint an attractive picture.

It’s too bad because sports used to be away for kids to get an education, and it’s completely perverted now

I can only speak of my grandson's experience. His team is a D3 playoff team.

If by portal you mean transfers? Yes, but I don't know if any cash is being paid out by some rich alum.

brings in older kids to play. this is what used to happen with jucos. You also have high school kids getting passed over by D1 and D2 coaches and they’re going to D3.

or good enough. That's where D3 comes in. Can you name any D3 player that is receiving NIL or any other kind of payment besides financial aid?

Thread Level: 6

My grandson's teammate is a D3 All American on playoff team. He missed the boat on payments.

But, watching the D3 national title game, the starting QB of one of the teams involved was a transfer from Okie State. Now, they didn't say if the player was a walk on or in the three deep at the QB position. But still, he did beak all kinds of D3 passing records apparently. Wonder if he is one of the players you're talking about.
