Better recruit the best to ascentuate the depth AND because of the portal.

The portal can drain your depth in the snap of a finger and you don't want to be left with a bunch of low end 3* projects and PWO as guys who are heavy in the rotation.

Players will hit the portal yearly, and you need to restock annually via high school players.

When it comes to roster management, the 3rd-4th string generally leaves.

Agreed and in this era with the exception of the Oregon DL, 2nd stringers are leaving!

Not to mention a guy in his 3rd year may be a RS So but he is technically eligible to declare for the Draft after the season. You have to continue to stock the cupboard and avoid any of the ways it could go bare (lackadaisical recruiting, missed targets, transfer portal).

really don't want to see a bunch of sophomores leaving every year, because ND wants to bring in older players who don't need developed.

Wondering if ND starts to focus on fewer players out of high school?
