Those always criticizing ND for not joining a conference conveniently ignore facts like these. This is an example of why not to do it both as an individual institution but also because these dogs get hung around your neck through affiliation.
There’s a reason most of the BIG wanted to sell receivables to PE.

and I think that things will have to change. How? I do not know.
exist in the young minds of the students they serve, could understand what foolish things they do in trying to keep up with what they perceive as the "Jones's. Does it really matter how thick the padding is on the bench or how many drink choices these kids have? There really is no limit on stupidity by self-professed "smart people"
.
Not for financial reasons but because this whole thing is a farce.

The article only summarizes the financial statements, but Rutgers' financial problems in its athletic department seem to be that the athletic programs just do not generate enough revenue to cover the operating expenses. Without the conference affiliation, the deficits get worse.
ND needs to stay independent for a whole host of reasons, but ND isn't Rutgers, so to me this "case study" doesn't apply.
But there’s also the point that the conference is only as strong as its weakest members financially and all but 2 of the BIG wanted to chase a bad PE deal solely for the $.
Two talking points when people say ND needs to join a conference: 1. How’d that work out for the ACC FB champion in 2025? 2. Look at Rutgers, they did and are going broke. Why jeopardize a financial model that works?
