He looks like Charlie Weis. Embarrassment. Excellent coach.
But buying expensive superstars does not guarantee success on the field... because it's a team sport.
When a kid chooses ND, it is because of academics, Marcus Freeman, 4 for 40, etc.
When he chooses another school, it is because of money.
I am as much of an ND homer as anyone but, and as much as I love to read our commitments' comments about why they chose ND, this new era of college football stains every decision these kids make.
Without knowing anything about this 'recruitment' (should we now call this 'bidding' instead of 'recruiting'?), I tend to think ND did right to maintain financial discipline.

Rocketman explained that it was exactly that below - a bidding war, and he has benn right on the money w his info too many times to ignore.
Now, your point is still valid imo in other cases.

It happens. ND outbids other schools all of the time.
ND has a $40 million plus NIL operation.
It's become more of in between position in the modern game.
They fill the gaps opened by the interior D linemen and are less involved in pass defense.

Come on down Roman. Start the Mt.Carmel to ND pipeline.
equal treatment.
In ND’s case, we have st least 5 LB’s on the team who are better at this time.
Paying an unproven LB more than them is very risky and not good for any locker room.
There is more to consider than just the cost to get the one player. A&M found this out themselves under Jimbo Fisher.

Texas A&M has quite a wealthy donor base, so I suspect this won't be an issue.
Still, if the booster group that promised to pony up the money reneges, he could end up like Jaden Rashada did.
Frankly, I was a bit surprised that the Florida Gators boosters who promised him the 13.5 million to renege on his Miami commitment, didn't have the money in hand to give...
